These improvements will maintain this section of the book as the primary source of information for pathology residents who plan to take the American Board of Pathology examination. In the section on systemic pathology, some chapters have undergone major changes as new authors have come aboard. Numerous improved diagrams borrowed from the seventh edition and supplemented by additional new ones complement these changes in the text.

The photographs have also been improved further, and essentially all black-and-white pictures have been replaced with high-quality colored photos.

Because this is a edition, I congratulate the authors for having incorporated many new literature citations including some from All these have been accomplished in a text that has not expanded in physical dimensions and, in fact, has become slightly fewer in the number of pages than the previous edition.

I have consulted colleagues who have been using the eighth edition for lecture preparations in the past few weeks, and they are quite impressed with this text. The only negative comment I have heard is with respect to Web site material for the professional edition.

Apparently, at times, the site is abruptly terminated. An e-mail to the publisher has indicated that they are aware of the problem and working to resolve it. It has been a particular pleasure for me to review the eighth edition and compare it with the third edition of the text that I used in medical school and to the seventh edition published in The editors and the authors have maintained the text as the gold standard for the education of medical students and residents.

As some medical schools shrink the amount of pathology taught to medical students, Robbins Pathology will become even more important to those young physicians who wish to have a solid understanding of the basics of disease processes. Ultimately, all physicians and nonphysicians who work on diseases come across fundamental questions in their area of interest.

It is refreshing to know that a well-written up-to-date resource is available to all and at a very reasonable price. As I prepare this review, the eighth edition has been out for about 2 months, and already the first printing of the professional edition is sold out, and additional texts are anticipated to become available soon.
